The Morning Report: Darkwing Duck Edition

In this edition of the morning report, we discuss the biggest news stories of the weekend and some commentary on the PSN situation, Bungie at (or not at) E3, Valve, and even Guilty Gear.

PS3 Woes

Some experts have been tasked with taking a look at Sony’s security issues, and some more light has been shed on their current situation. Dr. Gene Spafford, a security expert and professor at Purdue University, has revealed that the PSN servers were “running very old versions of Apache software that were unpatched and had no firewall installed.” This is based on security mailing lists that the professor is on.

Furthermore, he says that these issues were brought to Sony’s attention 2-3 months before the initial breach in April. No changes had been made between the time Sony was made aware of their problems and the breach.

As Joystiq reports, this is second-hand information as Dr. Spafford is just a member of the mailing list. This recent bit of news, however, is enough for congressmen (and women) to demand more information from Sony.

And More PSN Woes…

Sony’s Patrick Seybold has announced that the service will continue to stay offline for an unspecified amount of time (despite Sony’s promise of some functionality being restored this week). It turns out that they were unaware of the extent of the attack and would like to do more testing before they begin to bring certain features back online.

Bungie-less E3

Bungie has recently announced that they will not officially be at E3 this year. “We won’t officially be at E3 this year,” said Bungie. That’s what they said.

Bummer.

Valve not done with single-player experiences

Despite reports last week, it looks like Valve has not given up on single-player experiences. In an interview with a high school student on YouTube, Gave Newell has stated that “Valve is not giving up on single-player at all.” Valve does, however, plan on adding more social components to their games.

Newell stated that they began to realize the importance of a social component with Portal 2. If this means more things like Portal 2 co-op, then we’re totally on board.

Guilty Gear Creator Talks About Sequel and BlazBlue Cross-over

It’s quite clear that I’m the resident Halo fan/expert/psycho at SideQuesting, but did you know that I’m also the resident “Guilty Gear dude”? An interview with Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari has been posted on Siliconera regarding the future of the Guilty Gear franchise and the posibility of a BlazBlue/Guilty Gear cross-over. If they either of those sound like they’re up your alley, I suggest you head over there and see what he has to say. Either of these may be possible in the future if there is enough interest for them.  There’s a small chance of seeing where they were going with “that man” and the rest of the characters.

I’m very excite!
