The Evening Report: Heavy Games Edition

Day 14 of no PSN. Water is scarce, food is already gone. Delirium may be setting in; just look at me smash some faces in SOCOM 4 online. Wait, yup. Delirium has already set in. All that said, I was still able to drag myself around the net today to check every outfit for their top news. It wasn’t a pleasant day (Sony isn’t the only one pushing out bad news).

Split/Second 2 canceled? Use L.A. Noire as a dumbbell? Assassin’s Creed sequel? (Maybe.) Check after the break for the details!

Today Sony made one of the final steps to getting PSN back online. They are in the last phases of internally testing the new backbone for the service. Technicians are implementing enhanced protections for personal data. Sony says “It’s [their] top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.” I don’t want to be a fear monger, but I will wait a while before jumping back onto PSN. Make sure they truly have those kinks worked out.

So there’s a game coming called L.A. Noire, you may have heard of it? It’s a small, little Rockstar and Team Bondi joint that is due for release in just under two weeks. New details emerged today regarding the amount of storage needed to contain those beautifully crafted textures and facial animations. Rockstar stated the game needs three DVDs to fit all of its massive beauty on the Xbox 360. Sure, not a huge deal for most people, so if you are lazy then just go for the PS3 version (as it all fits on one Blu-Ray).

Last year, Split/Second was one of my favorite games, as well as making the top ten cut on many other sites’ GOTY lists. So when Black Rock Studios confirmed today that there were going to be massive layoffs, I was quite devastated. They also announced that the sequel to the critically successful game was upended and eventually canceled in December of 2010. The game did sell poorly, but releasing alongside another arcade racer (Blur), Red Dead Redemption and another critically successful game (Alan Wake) couldn’t have boosted the sales very much.

The news of the day belongs to Ubisoft. Game Informer put out some details on their June issue, which has on the cover Ezio and Altair of Assassin’s Creed fame. Each of those two, and series protagonist Desmond, will all play a part in Assassin’s Creed Revelations, the next game in the storied franchise. Details are sparse at the moment, but news of a new weapon and a tool that “changes the way you’ll fight and traverse the world” are mentioned in this reveal piece. If you want to read 12 whole pages on the next game, be sure to pick up the June issue of Game Informer.
