The Evening Report: Do the right thing and grab a plunger

Finals week is upon us, and some people have already put the finishing touches on their semester.  However, in this lull (either due to studying or pre-E3 silence), we’ve been able to pick out some notable news for the date.  Sony finds itself having to defend its “Welcome Back” offer, while other members of Sony go on the offensive.  We’ve also got some news on the mobile gaming front.

Sony stands by its “Welcome Back” offer

PSN is slowly returning, and Sony plans on winning back the hearts of its customers by offering free PS3 and PSP games through PSN.  What if you aren’t interested in any of the games of the games that Son is offering?  What if you already own them?

Unsatisfied customers have hit the Playstation Blog with their complains, and Sony stands by their offer.

Sony’s Nick Caplin has since apologized to customers with such complains, but couldn’t offer much more than an explanation.  He sites the fact that “the average Metacritic rating for [the offered] games is over 84%,” and that it’s very difficult to please 77 million people.

He has since clarified that of the PS3 and PSP selections, people may choose two from each group.  Throw in that 30 day trial for PS Plus, and he says that “you should have a busy month of gaming.”

Yeah!  That’s a busy month of gaming.  What else did you want?  An orphan?  A pint of his blood?

Sony CEO strikes back

Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently spoke with reporters about the PSN breach.  “Most of these breaches go unreported by companies.  Forty-three percent notify victims within a month,” Stringer said.  “We reported i a week.  You’re telling me my week wasn’t fast enough?”

Well, in short?  Yeah.

It’s kind of like clogging a toilet.  If you clog a toilet, it’s kind of your responsibility to take care of it.  It’s very possible that you may have walked away from it, with the intent of trying to flush it an hour later after things settle down.  But what if someone walks into the bathroom during this hour and sees the mess you’ve left?  Now, you’ve grossed out a stranger.

And sure.  Some awful, terrible people may clog a toilet and walk away from it forever.  That doesn’t make it okay for you to do that.  Simply put, it’s just better for you to do the right thing and take a plunger to it immediately.

So, no.  It’s not okay for you to leave a clogged doody in the toilet for a week.  The very least you can do is warn someone.

I’m sorry for that analogy.

Infinity Blade update adds multiplayer and more

People who played Infinity Blade and said “I don’t get it” can move on.  This bit of news isn’t for you.

Infinity Blade will be getting a free update that will add multiplayer mode (called “Arena”) and Survivor Mode.  The multiplayer mode allows you to duke it out with your friends through Game Center.  Survivor mode will put you in an endless battle against computer-controlled opponents.

Substantial updates like this and Angry Birds Seasons really show how developers are approaching mobile devices as true gaming platforms.  Now, if we could just figure out how to get new, free content on consoles…
