Nintendo just finished with their keynote for GDC 2011. The keynote was given by Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime, and they let the GDC attendees and those watching online in on Nintendo’s history and their plans for the future. While ‘Tinkle Popo’ (the original US title for Kirby) was a cool story, I really think everyone is more keen on what is coming to the 3DS and the Wii this year.
As soon as Reggie of Nintendo of America took to the stage, he promptly stated that “The primary function of the Nintendo 3DS is to play games.” Then, he proceeded to announce a partnership Nintendo has with Netflix to bring streaming content to the 3DS. He also stated that some of this content will be in 3D, starting in the summer. Other 3D video content will be available, such as a wireless Nintendo channel created for the 3DS.
Also explained upon was the eShop, which will include all DSiWare and a virtual console similar to that on the Wii. With the eShop comes a browser for the 3DS, not many details have been announced as to it’s functionality, however, but I am betting that it will not be very deep. Oh, and if you still are not on a high speed, wireless router, have no fear for Nintendo has partnered with AT&T to bring 10,000 free wireless hotspots across the US to make sure you have full connectivity.
The last bit of non-industry focused news was just that of a teaser by Iwata-san showing a Super Mario logo with a raccoon tale hanging off of the ‘O’. If you’ve played Super Mario Bros. 3, you have a pretty good indication as to what this means.
Last dregs of info: There will be 3D video recording with the 3DS, and our buddies at Joystiq got their hands on some Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword gameplay footage. We urge you to check it out.
