On this loveliest (or loneliest) of days we Sidequesters are sacrificing our social lives (or lack there of) to give you guys a nice roundup of the biggest stories from around the industry. Today was an interesting day in the industry. From game cancellations, to new game announcements, it seems love was in the air between PR and the games press.
Did everyone know that companies like money? Well, you should, publishers don’t greenlight sequels because they respect vision (we will get to you later, Mirror’s Edge 2). Ubisoft decided today (after counting their fat wads of cash) that they would like more money in their bank account. So, the next title in the Assassin’s Creed series will be hitting store shelves sometime in the next fiscal year (April 1, 2011 – March 31, 2012). More details on the game are sure to come out in their fiscal year end conference call in May.

I am not a hardware or software designer, but I am a hardware and software user. Something that ALWAYS turns me away from early adoption of a product is lack of backwards compatibility. In the case of the Xperia Play, it would have taken quite a bit for me to put down my Droid X, and pick up this new device. While the allure of actual buttons is tempting, the inability for me to put my already purchased PSN titles on the phone, turned me off of it. Repurchasing something that is already a second purchase, just isn’t going to happen for me. If you are into paying for the same thing twice, I am sure you will be very happy with this deal.

Anybody remember that really slick first person parkour game that came out in 2008? Well, may those memories stay strong as it looks like those will be the only you have of our fair Faith and Mirror’s Edge. Critical reception be damned, not enough people bought the game. Sure using the guns may have completely sucked, but enough for people to not buy it? I guess so. EA, try as they could to get people to latch onto new IPs in 2008, couldn’t quite get over the hump. Mirror’s Edge wasn’t the only new IP commercial failure for them in the year. This is dedicated to dear Ryan Gan, as this news has struck him hardest.

Finally, thank you to Valve, who gave us all a great treat with a promo video for Portal 2. Love truly was in the air when they created this:

Remember, if you are single, the Day of St. Valentine was created just for the capitalist in all of us. It wasn’t created just to spite you, really. Put down the gun.
To all of those out there with their significant others, and the rest out their with their favorite…toys…and stuff, we would like to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!
