Of Big Daddies and Little Sisters

I’m a sucker for gaming concept art.  I typically buy the collector’s editions of games if it includes sweet, sweet art and visions into the game design process.  I pre-ordered the first Bioshock from Best Buy just so that I could get the free art book along with it (which was awesome, by the way).  So when 2K releases any sketches and development art for Bioshock 2 I immediately take notice.

Recently the studio (via their Cult of Rapture site) released images showcasing the development of the first Big Daddy from the sequel.  How do you reverse-engineer the already-iconic character?  Well, rather interestingly, actually.  The latest images show a Daddy with more human-like proportions and purposeful tools (ahem, weapons).  The art contains the same gritty colors, but is decidedly more graphic in nature rather than the DaVinci-style art often seen in concept sketches.  In fact the images, after the break, look like they’ve been rendered with markers.  Very cool.

2K explains:

Between the first BioShock and the sequel, you’ve seen a lot of concept art for Big Daddies. The logic behind this concept art went beyond different designs and suit combinations. The artists had to imagine what the very first Big Daddy would have on him — this Big Daddy had to feel like he was a rough draft or a work-in-progress, an amalgam of Big Daddies to come.

Take a look at the Daddies, as well as the updated (somewhat) Little Sisters from Bioshock 2 after the jump.
