With the toys to life market in a strange state of flux right now, thanks to the death of Disney Infinity and the LEGO Dimensions boom, Skylanders is in a weird spot. It innovates with each yearly edition, and is almost predictable in its unpredictability. It’s always been on the cusp of being a great kids’ property, but apart from the games there hadn’t been much to celebrate.
That potentially changes later this month, when Skylanders Academy, a new animated series based on the IP, arrives on Netflix.
Academy stars some of the most popular Skylanders characters in school, including Spyro, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Kaos, and gives them flushed out personalities. It also brings along celebrity voices, including Justin Long as Spyro and Norm Macdonald as Glumshanks, to add a bit of star power. With the game releasing this week, it’ll be interesting to see if any cross-over will take place with the show, whether just in characters and basic plot points or special Skylanders figures based on their in-show versions.
Activision throws a lot of weight behind its properties, and Skylanders is one of its biggest. The show arrives on October 28, with a second season already approved for a late 2017 premiere on Netflix as well.
