Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards 2014 rises from the ashes of the VGX

Last year’s VGX awards thing on Spike was a clusterbleep. Like, it couldn’t get any worse than a co-host Joel McHale caring so little about games that he basically slept through half of the show, making an awkward tandem with Geoff Keighley even worse.

But now it’s back!

Wait, wait — no it’s not. Spike isn’t actually having an awards show this year (or probably ever again). From the ashes of the Spike VGAs (Video Game Awards) come the uniquely titled The Game Awards! On video!

Producer Geoff Keighley (that’s a fancy title, Geoff!) has pulled away from Spike and announced the brand new show, taking place on December 5 in Las Vegas. The show will take place live, but will be streamed across Xbox Live, PSN, Twitch, and Nintendo… whatever that means. The show aims to give games the awards spotlight in pop culture that they deserve. Along with awards, the GAs will also have the prerequisite trailer reveals and game debuts, as well as musical performances.

So they’re basically what the old VGAs were.

It does look like there will be some heavy support from the major players in the industry, as leaders of the gaming industry from Microsoft, Ubisoft, and even Valve and Nintendo are on the advisory board.

No matter, we still plan on having fun during our annual live stream drink fest. Watch last year’s for our crazy game lobotomy.

The Game Awards 2014 take place on December 5 at 9PM EST at the AXIS Theater in Las Vegas.
