That’s Mario up there, in what will surely be the most popular theme and cover plate to grace the New 3DS.
As announced earlier, the updated portable will allow for removable faceplates and downloadable themes. The themes will come to all 3DS models — current and future — via system update in October, and will be purchasable through Nintendo’s eShop. No word on price yet, or if themes can be customized outside of those purchased.
As for the New 3DS-specific cover plates, which Nintendo is calling “Kisekae Plates”, the company has released images of the first 38, ranging in price from 1000-1500 yen.
From a design standpoint, it’s great to see not just character-driven concepts but purely graphic designs as well. Personal favorites: the Link theme, the high contrast dark/light star theme & cover plate, and the faux-wood cover plate. I smell a booming industry for cover plates about to take place.
